Answer: Taxes, Audits, Types of Audits

What is a correspondence audit?

A correspondence audit is a tax audit performed by the Internal Revenue Service through the mail. Typically, the IRS sends you a letter explaining any questions they have on your return. You send back copies (not originals) of any documents that support your return.

Correspondence audits are usually the easiest type of tax audit to deal with, in part because you have plenty of time to collect your paperwork -- and your thoughts. An agent isn’t sitting across the table from you, asking questions that you are expected to answer immediately.
