Can I deduct the cost of career counseling?

You can deduct the cost of career counseling as a miscellaneous deduction (subject to the 2% floor). Generally, however, the deduction is allowed only if you’re looking for a job in the same line of work as your current one.

As an example, say you are a history teacher by training, but you want to write speeches for politicians for a living. You cannot write off the cost of counseling that helps you land a job in an entirely different profession. Similar rules apply to deductions for employment agency fees.
