How can I stop payment on a check?

If you need to stop payment on a check, call the bank immediately. If the check is for a small amount, it may not be worth the trouble. You’ll probably have to pay a fee of $10 to $25 or more. Then, if the check holder is really determined, you may have to renew your stop-payment order again in six months -- the length of time that federal law generally requires that a "stop-payment" notice remain in effect. Six months from now, they may try to cash the check again.
