Which is a better measure of investment performance -- total return or market price increase?

Total return is a better measure of investment performance. Instead of measuring just the change in price or value over time, total return also considers interest, dividends, and capital gains distributions. You can use the MSN Money Portfolio Manager to automatically track dividend payments, price fluctuations and total return.

The portfolio manager is free, but you must download the software to your computer.
