AEGON NV Releases USD 650 Million of Capital as Part of its Capital Preservation Program

AEGON NV announced that it has completed a capital management transaction that will make available approximately USD 650 million of additional regulatory capital to its United States operations. The transaction, which has an initial size of USD 900 million, serves to realize the value of a portion of future profits associated with an existing book of traditional life business. The term of the transaction between AEGON and JPMorgan Chase Bank is 10 years. Between the third quarter of 2008 and the second quarter of 2009, AEGON released EUR 3.3 billion of capital from its businesses and is committed to exploring additional capital preservation initiatives.

AEGON N.V. announced that the Company and Sony Life Insurance Co., Ltd. has obtained final approval from the Japanese regulatory authorities to launch business operations in 2009. The 50-50 joint venture - known as AEGON Sony Life Insurance Co., Ltd. (ASLIC)- will initially focus on the sale of variable annuity products which will be distributed through Sony Life's LIFEPLANNER sales employees, as well as banks and other financial institutions. ASLIC is expected to begin operations in early December.
