Where the jobs -- and the paychecks -- are

Placer, Calif. leads the nation in employment growth. Wages grew fastest in Marin, Calif., while New York still pays the most per week.

By Kim Khan

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) compiles data from summaries of employment of workers covered by unemployment insurance. States require that most employers pay quarterly taxes based on the employment and wages of workers covered by unemployment insurance, making it a good source to track net changes over time in pay and employment.

Not all workers are covered by unemployment insurance. Major exclusions include self-employed workers, religious organizations, most agricultural workers on small farms, all members of the Armed Forces, elected officials in most states, most employees of railroads, some domestic workers, most student workers at schools, and employees of certain small nonprofit organizations.

Data on pay include salary, overtime, bonuses and any other special pay.
