My CNBC picks are making money

advertisement
Since I began picking stocks on 'Morning Call,' my closed positions are up an average of almost 13%, beating the S&P 500.

By Jim Jubak

This week I have a special treat: I'm posting the performance of every one of my weekly picks since I began this gig on CNBC's "Morning Call" in January 2004.

There are a lot of ways to slice and dice performance numbers, but here's a measure that I think gives a pretty accurate picture of the performance of my recommendations.

My closed picks, those I've sold automatically six months after I recommended them, are up an average of 12.7% during a period when the Standard & Poor's 500 was down 4%. A total of 68.8% of my 80 picks during that period from Jan. 16, 2004, through July 21, 2004 were winners.

The three worst performers: The Pep Boys (PBY, news, msgs), down 54.6%, Central Parking (CPC, news, msgs), down 34.3%, and Administaff (ASF, news, msgs), down 34%.

The three best performers: Penn National Gaming (PENN, news, msgs), up 95.7%, Potash (POT, news, msgs), up 76.6%, and Nucor (NUE, news, msgs), up 67.3%.

Remember the rules of my CNBC stock picks: The recommendations are for a six-month holding period, and I automatically sell a pick six months after I've recommended it.

All closed positions: CNBC picks are for a 6 month time horizon and, for reporting purposes, are assumed sold 6 months after recommendation date.

It's harder to judge the performance of the recommendations that are still open. The average gain for the 115 open picks is 9.7%. That trails the S&P 500 index, which gained 11% from Aug. 17, 2004 through Feb. 16.

I think the open picks will make up that ground and more so as they mature: The average gain is now dragged down by the very small gains (and losses, of course) from any stock recently. I'm especially encouraged though by the high winning percentage in the open picks: 77% are up since my recommendation. (Of course, the market was up during the period, too.)

The three worst performers to date among my open recommendations: Greenbrier (GBX, news, msgs), down 25.7%, Harvest Natural Resources (HNR, news, msgs), down 21.4%, and a second pick of Greenbrier, down 17%.

The three best performers to date: Valero Energy (VLO, news, msgs), up 52.9%, NCR (NCR, news, msgs), up 45%, and Bank of Montreal (BMO, news, msgs), up 44.5%. I was surprised that more energy companies didn't make the top three but two drillers just missed it: Hydril (HYDL, news, msgs), up 44.3%, and Cal Dive International (CDIS, news, msgs), up 42.5%.

To put together these short-term picks, I rely largely on a series of stock screens, weighted heavily for momentum naturally but also including fundamental and valuation measures. The result is a list of relatively unfamiliar stocks. For every PepsiCo (PEP, news, msgs) or Johnson & Johnson (JNJ, news, msgs), you'll find a dozen stocks that aren't household names. That's one of the things I like best about picking stocks for CNBC's "Morning Call": It gives me a chance to expose viewers and readers to new names that can make investors money.

Editor's Note: A new Jubaks Journal is posted every Tuesday and Friday.

I try very hard not to own any of the stocks I recommend on CNBC at the time I recommend them. My rule is that I won't buy anything I recommend on air or on the site until three days or more after the public pick. I now own the following stocks that are on the open positions list: Berkshire Hathaway, EMC, Engineered Support System, Main Street Banks, Penn Virginia, PepsiCo and Smithfield Foods. I don't own short positions in any stock mentioned in this column or listed in these tables.
