Step 1: Research your options
The Web is a powerful tool that previous generations never had in selecting the right college or university.

How to assess the best values among colleges

College search engines
Weed through the hundreds of colleges quickly using the MSN MoneyCentral College Search tool provided by FastWeb. It provides links directly to hundreds of college Web sites, based on the individual school's name.

Step 2: Stay on schedule
Colleges adhere to fairly rigid admission schedules, particularly the most sought-after schools. Everything from seeking financial aid to taking the standardized tests follow a timeline.

For a detailed, month-by-month schedule of what to do to jump through all the hoops of the college admissions and financial aid process, check out the College Timeline on the FastWeb site.

Step 3: Take the tests
A critical part of getting into college is to take one of the standardized admission tests. The most commonly used -- and recognized by colleges -- are the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the American College Test (ACT).

Sample tests
The Princeton Review actually allows you to take a mock version of the SAT. Meanwhile, the makers of the SAT, the College Board, provide sample tests along with dates and locations where tests will be given.

Step 4: Apply to schools
The application process is getting more streamlined, in part because of the Web.

Apply on the Web
MoneyCentral and fastweb's college search tool lets you apply online to colleges and universities in the United States from their Web sites.
