If you have installed the synchronization update, and are having problems running synchronization, please try the following applicable steps:

  1. If after any step you are successfully able to sync a Money file with MSN Money the first time, try doing an “Update Now” to re-sync with MSN Money a second time to test and be sure that it is working. Certain types of Internet security software, anti-virus software, Internet Acceleration software and Firewall software can disrupt the ability of Money to complete the connection to the MSN Money server.
  2. Verify your system date and time is correct by double-clicking the time of day located in the lower right-hand corner of your desktop in the system tray.
  3. Verify that the Passport being used is valid by browsing to www.passport.com and Sign In to this web site, if this fails please contact Passport support at this same web site.
  4. Create a New Money file and test syncing it to your MSN Money account. Create a New Folder on the Desktop with the name Money test files. Open Money and go to File, New. Give the file the name Test1.
    • If it successfully syncs both on the initial setup and after doing a manual sync by clicking “Update Now” try the steps below otherwise go onto step 4.b:
      1) The original file most likely is damaged and will need to be repaired.
      a) Run a simple salvage (-s) on the original file following the isntructions in How to Resolved File Inconsistencies.
      b) Next run a Level 1 Super Salvage on the original file and name it Salv1.
      c) Run a Level 2 Super Salvage on the Salv1 file and name it Salv2.
      d) Run a simple salvage (-s) on the Salv2 file.

      2) Try to sync the Salv2 file and then do an Update Now.

      3) If the Salv2 file fails to sync either on the initial setup or after doing a manual sync check the following two items:
      a) Read the Knowledge Base article Q312812 to learn more about how the sync process can fail if any of your Financial Institution Accounts and Investments Accounts are using any invalid characters such as &, %, etc. if this is true rename them by go to the Account List, right-click over the account and selecting Rename.
      b) Verify that all Financial Institution accounts are completely setup and updated for online services. A partially setup account can also cause the sync process to fail. Go Accounts and Bills, Online Services Manager and one by one, select each Financial Institution and click Modify services and then follow the instructions for updating services.
Note: If any accounts have a "Setup Online Services" selection, then either complete the setup of online services for this financial institution or alter this setup to not reflect this institution as having online services. To do this, select "Specify where accounts are held" on the left hand side under "Common Tasks", click to highlight the financial institution and select "Move Account.." highlight "Not held at a financial institution" and click OK.

      4) If the Salv2 file still fails to sync either on the initial setup or after doing a manual sync go onto step 5.

    • If it fails to sync on either the initial setup or after doing a manual sync the problem may be with the information on the server. Try the following steps:

      1) Log into MSN Money using the Passport ID that is associated with the Original Money file.
      a) Read "How to Remove Personal Information from MSN Money" to remove the Portfolio. Note: Prior to deleting the .inv file, make a copy of it in the Money test files folder on the Desktop.
      b) Create another New Money file, name it Test2 and save it in the Money test files folder on the desktop.
      c) Try to sync the Test2 file with the MSN Money account followed by an Update Now to sync a second time.
      d) If the Test2 file successfully syncs both on the initial setup and after doing a manual sync by clicking “Update Now” confirm that the problem is with the Portfolio by performing the steps below otherwise go onto step 4.b.2).
      a. Go back into the Portfolio on MSN Money to start the Restore Portfolio Wizard. If it doesn’t start automatically click on File and choose Restore Backup.
      b. Restore the Portfolio from the copy placed in the Money test files folder.
      c. Try to do another Update Now which should cause the sync to fail.
      d. Remove Portfolio again.
      e. Recreate the Portfolio manually.

      2) Create a new Passport ID and restore the existing Portfolio then try syncing to it with a new Money file.
      b) Create another New Money file, name it Test3 and save it in the Money test files folder on the desktop.
      c) Try to sync the Test3 file with the MSN Money account followed by an Update Now to sync a second time.
      a. If the Test3 file successfully syncs both on the initial setup and after doing a manual sync by clicking “Update Now”, either work with this new Passport ID or remove the My Accounts information on the old Passport ID by following the steps under the section "Remove Information from My Accounts" in the "How to Remove Personal Information from MSN Money" Knowledge Base article.
      b. If the Test3 file fails to sync either on the initial setup or after doing a manual sync go onto step 5.

  5. Uninstall and then reinstall both Money and the MSN Money ActiveX controls.
    a. Using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, remove Money.
    b. Reinstall Money to a new directory by selecting a Custom install during the installation setup of Money. Example: C:\MS Money.
    c. Try removing and reinstalling the MSN Money controls.
    d. Try to setup the sync again. If it fails either on the initial sync or after clicking Update Now then go onto step 6.
  6. Do either of the following depending on which one the customer chooses to do.
    a. Backup the Money file then using the backup copy, begin deleting accounts one at a time. Try to sync the file to the new Passport ID after each deleted account. This will help to isolate the possible faulty account.
    b. Export each account and import one account at a time into a new Money file. Try to sync the new Money file to the new Passport ID after each imported account. This will help to isolate the possible faulty account.
